My Decade in Music So Far: Jamieson Cox

This week, Pitchfork shared lists featuring the best albums and tracks of the decade so far. We asked Pitchfork writers and editors to share a favorite song and album that didn't make the list, along with a music highlight and their personal Top 20s. Check back for more installments of My Decade in Music So Far.

Chris Cohen: Overgrown Path [Captured Tracks]

I'm hoping at least one of my colleagues is going to devote this space to Carly Rae Jepsen's forgotten minor pop masterpiece Kiss—please don't let me down, colleagues!—so I can feel OK about devoting mine to an album that received even less attention. Chris Cohen's Overgrown Path is a knotty, mystical, and ultra-tender collection of mossy folk-pop tunes. Spend time with this album and it starts to feel like a hidden grove just a few steps off a well-worn trail, a safe space that you're happy to keep to yourself.

Eleanor Friedberger: "Roosevelt Island" [Merge]

I've only been to New York three times, and every time I think about it—the memories I've made there, the prospect of going back sometime soon, anything—I hear Eleanor Friedberger's "Roosevelt Island" on a little loop in the back of my brain. It's one of the greatest "city songs" ever recorded, a funky document of a day spent roaming the Five Boroughs that captures all of the excitement, fear, and wonder the world's greatest cities can inspire in us. I like it best this time of year, when the days are still sticky and sun-drenched but the nights are cool.

Musical Highlight of the Last Five Years: I have a playlist named "Running Stuff"—creative, I know—that I take with me every time I tie up my shoes and hit the pavement. It's filled with songs I know and love, songs I can rely on when I need to dig deep and finish strong or struggle through a hill or blast past someone in a race. When I think about the last half-decade, I remember moments like that: "Inspector Norse" and "Worst Behaviour" and others, carrying me home, helping me realize the best of myself.
