Musical Highlight of the Last Five Years: Watching Hype Williams (RIP) play a bewildering set of abrasive, tuneless drone and melodica, with the occasional techno break and (naturally) bodybuilders flexing in the foreground; Soundtracking many a long train ride to M83’s Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming and realizing that, sometimes, looking out a window is all you need to feel something; Getting carried off stage by security after jumping up and doing a little jig during an all-flames set from Africa Hitech; Seeing Lena Dunham accidentally walk into a Lil B show at Manhattan’s New Museum before walking out and saying to her friend, “That was not where we were supposed to be going”; Eating a chicken sandwich while listening to Foster the People’s “Helena Beat” in an Atlanta dive bar and realizing that sometimes life is best enjoyed at the exact moment you’re currently caught up in; Watching Kanye West debut tracks from Yeezus at 2013’s Governor’s Ball festival and being caught up in the thrilling rush of the moment; Seeing Boyhood and realizing that “Soak Up the Sun” was the hottest track Sheryl Crow ever wrote; Any other time I unplugged from the internet, plugged in my headphones, and left all natural and digital worlds in favor of my own inviting, infinite headspace.
