My Decade in Music So Far: Nate Patrin

This week, Pitchfork shared lists featuring the best albums and tracks of the decade so far. We asked Pitchfork writers and editors to share a favorite song and album that didn't make the list, along with a music highlight and their personal Top 10s or 20s. Check back for more installments of My Decade in Music So Far.

Justice: Audio, Video, Disco [Ed Banger]

They pared down the filter-house gurgle and happy-aggro clobbering (though thankfully not entirely; “Canon” and “Helix” stay slaying). And why? So they could make crunchy prog-pop with a backbeat that made “I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You” sound more momentous a '77 milestone than “God Save the Queen”. The calm-before-the-maelstrom buildup at the end of the title track (and the album) is the stuff speeding tickets are made of.

Skipp Coon & Mr. Nick: "4-28-1967 pt. 2" [ft. David Banner & Luca Brazi] [self-released]

The title is the day Ali's title was stripped for draft evasion, the opening monologue is Chayefsky's finest moment, the sample is Joao Donato at his most sinister, and the lyrics – including David Banner going all out over one of the sparsest beats he's ever left magnesium burns on – would only be didactic in a post-Nixonland America that's better than the one we have now.

Musical Highlight of the Last Five Years: Having it finally hit home during an early gameplay session that Flying Lotus actually having his own radio station in Grand Theft Auto V meant the potential audience for FlyLo, Machinedrum, Thundercat, DJ Rashad, and Kingdom just went stratospheric.
