My Decade in Music So Far: Andrew Ryce

This week, Pitchfork shared lists featuring the best albums and tracks of the decade so far. We asked Pitchfork writers and editors to share a favorite song and album that didn't make the list, along with a music highlight and their personal Top 10s or 20s. Check back for more installments of My Decade in Music So Far.

Jessy Lanza: Pull My Hair Back [Hyperdub]

A record that captures the humble headspace that can only come with a debut album, Pull My Hair Back was a stunning introduction to Jessy Lanza that felt earth-shaking primarily because it was so meek. Singing her soulful songs from behind a keyboard and with keen production help from Junior Boys' unmistakable Jeremy Greenspan, Pull My Hair Back felt like the birth of a star—a streak of casual, effortlessly sexy brilliance in an underground dance music world that too often settles for mediocrity when it comes to vocalists.

Pev & Kowton: "Raw Code" [Hessle Audio]

One of the most explosive dance tracks of the decade, what's most impressive about "Raw Code" is that it sounds like it could have come from any decade. It typifies the Livity Sound aesthetic of brushed stone and concrete—there are very few production flourishes nor anything particularly trendy, just a hell of a drop that sounds feels like a giant cinder block slamming into the dance floor every time you hear it.

Musical Highlight of the Last Five Years: Taking my mom to see Paul McCartney in 2012—both for finally seeing a Beatle in the flesh and for seeing my mom the happiest I've ever witnessed.
