This week, Pitchfork shared lists featuring the best albums and tracks of the decade so far. We asked Pitchfork writers and editors to share a favorite song and album that didn't make the list, along with a music highlight and their personal Top 10s or 20s. Check back for more installments of My Decade in Music So Far.
Jam City: Classical Curves [Night Slugs]
A scheming, conceptual album that sounds like a child banging on pots and pans in the Jetsons' kitchen. It's already been stripped for parts by a generation of grime producers searching for its rare marriage of levitation and violence. This is what electronic body music sounds like in 2014.
Pearson Sound: "Clutch" [Hessle Audio]
With "Clutch" David Kennedy (Pearson Sound) took the house music-staple drum track—literally a track containing multiple, copter-ing rhythms to be mixed by a DJ—and deconstructed it. What he comes away with is a thicket of tonally complex rhythmic snaps, each run of snares or hats seemingly setting you up for a counter. Like when people compare boxing to chess, we can admit that "Clutch" is cerebral so long as we don't forget that there's still lots of face-punching.
Musical Highlight of the Last Five Years: An evening spent touring the clubs of East London, which bloomed from a plan to visit the legendary Fabric club on a night when it was not, in fact, open. The evening crested when the bouncer at Dalston's Dance Tunnel looked at my passport and openly laughed at my old age in front of the cool smokers. Jungle Wonz, were right: time marches on.
