My Decade in Music So Far: Marc Hogan

This week, Pitchfork shared lists featuring the best albums and tracks of the decade so far. We asked Pitchfork writers and editors to share a favorite song and album that didn't make the list, along with a music highlight and their personal Top 10s or 20s. Deerhunter: Monomania [4AD]

Sooner or later, every great band has to make a classic album that's misunderstood in its own time. For Deerhunter, I hope, history will show that to have been Monomania, which I completely expected to be my favorite album of 2013 until a certain Beyoncé-filled night in December. I wrote about it here and here. (As for a favorite album that missed Best New Music-level prominence altogether, White Hinterland's Kairos has never left whichever MP3-playing device I've used since 2010.)

M.I.A.: "Come Walk With Me" [XL]

There are plenty of intellectual reasons this single from last year's Matangi could show up here (Katherine St. Asaph captured those very well in her 2013 year-end blurb), but my motivation is also personal. One day last winter I made the mistake of playing my vinyl copy for our 2-year-old, Frank, correctly guessing he'd like all the unusual sound effects. For months, he would demand we put it on over and over again. Please forgive the ridiculous mental image, but it's also probably the only song I voted for on this list that I taught myself to play on ukulele. It works better if you make it shorter.

Musical Highlight of the Last Five Years: Finally hearing Drake's Take Care after it leaked while my wife and I were at the hospital for Frank's birth. Also, every time we saw the Poison Control Center play live.
